Benys is recovering in intensive care after being shot in the line of duty on Monday and his accused shooter is in jail after his arrest.
Kingsville police say Benys was shot around 5:09 p.m. Monday after an apparent domestic dispute on North Wanda Drive in Kingsville. Several officers responded to the call, and while there, Benys was shot.
The suspect, 40-year-old Alfredo Deleon, is currently held in Kleberg County Jail without bond. Deleon has been charged with three counts of Capital Murder of a police man or firemen-inchoate.
What exactly does that charge mean? Inchoate means the full criminal act was not completed, so Deleon will still have the charge Capital Murder of a police man or firemen-inchoate regardless of the outcome of the officer who was shot. Deleon was also charged with one count of Attempted Murder.
While some officers provided aid to the wounded officer, several others chased down the suspect as he fled the scene. They chased him to the intersection of South 11th Street and Miller, where they were able to catch and arrest him.
Another officer involved in the shooting is now on administrative leave while an investigation by the office of professional standards continues.
The veteran officer who was shot has been with the Kingsville Police Department for 19 years. He was airlifted to a Corpus Christi hospital after the incident where he is being treated for a gunshot wound.
Benys is being praised by the Kingsville community for his service to the department and the city.
A post from the Kingsville Texas Youth Football League - Kingsville Brahmas identifies him as a former coach.
"We ask our KTYFL Family to please lift Officer Sherman Benys and his family up in prayer," says the post."Officer Benys suffered gunshot wounds earlier this evening. Mr. Benys is a former coach with our organization coaching alongside League President Kevin Wyckham. May the Lord wrap Mr. Benys in his protection."
The Nueces County Precinct Five Constable mentioned in a Facebook post that the officer was airlifted to the Corpus Christi Trauma Hospital in Spohn Shoreline Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now listed in stable but critical condition.
"Please continue to pray for his recovery an for his family who is going through this traumatic experience," the Facebook post read.
The Texas A&M University-Kingsville Police Department, Kleberg County Sheriffs Office, County Attorney Task Force, Texas Rangers and DPS are assisting in investigating the domestic violence call and the shooting that resulted in the officer's injury.
The Kingsville Police Department will host three blood drives Friday, Monday and Tuesday at the police department to help the blood bank replenish crucial blood supply levels that help keep Benys alive.
