CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Grillmasters gathered at N.O. Simmons Park in Ingleside on Saturday for Battlin' BBQ's cook-off.

Battlin' BBQ is a non-profit organization that started last year to provide relief for families whose children suffer from cancer.

"It started with a kid in our community that's actually a friend's son," Brian Yoder, President of Battlin' BBQ, says "And we had a small cook off and decided that this is something we want to do every year."

There were 20 entries for last year's cook-off and this year, 51 teams competed.

The proceeds from each Battlin' BBQ cook-off have benefited one family whose child is suffering from cancer.

The proceeds from Saturday's cook-off are going to 6-year old Cayson Rodriguez and his family. Cayson was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on September 24th, 2018.

"The cells inside the blood aren't working the way they're supposed to so you know, chemo and blood transfusions and platelettes," Cayson's mom, Chelsea Rodriguez says "it's all been a very interesting battle. It's new every day."

"It means everything to us. It's you know, an absolutely amazing turn out. The support that we have is absolutely astounding." Rodriguez says.
