CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Fireworks are illegal in Corpus Christi city limits, but that doesn't mean you won't see a lot of them during the 4th of July weekend.
Last year, the Corpus Christi Police Department received more than 250 complaints about people lighting fireworks. 13 citations were issued.
Police say they can only ticket people caught in the act, which isn't easy.
"It is hard to catch people because you know they are going up in the air, and we are getting the calls, and by the time we get over there, they are either already done, or we can't pinpoint exactly where they are coming from," said CCPD Captain Trenade Paddock-Roberts
Even though it's tough to catch violators, the police department plans to beef up patrols.
If you're caught, you can face a fine of up to $2,000 for each opened fireworks package in your possession.
If you want to make a fireworks complaint, call the department's non-emergency number which is 361-886-2600.
