CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — An 82-year-old Sandia man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on County Road 369, about 12 miles west of Sandia in Jim Wells County.

Texas Highway Patrol Sgt. Nathan Brandley said that Juan Cornejo Jr. was pronounced dead at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital earlier today from injuries from the accident, which occurred about 12:05 p.m. on Saturday.

A preliminary investigation shows that Cornejo's 2012 Ford Expedition SUV was traveling westbound on the highway when it failed to stop at the intersection of County Road 369 and FM 534. The driver passed through the intersection and veered off the road before it plowed into a tree to the right of the FM road.

Cornejo was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. He was airlifted by Halo to Christus Spohn Shoreline in Corpus Christi with his injuries.

DPS Troopers are continuing their investigation into the accident.
