64-year-old Aransas Pass man dead after being struck by a car

ARANSAS PASS, Texas — A 64-year-old pedestrian is dead after a vehicle crash Wednesday evening.

Aransas Pass police report that the crash involving the pedestrian occurred in the southbound lanes on Highway 35 near Moore Avenue shortly after 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers found the man,Aransas Pass resident Dred Martin, dead, lying in the road, with severe, extensive injuries. He was "unrevivable," according to police.

Witnesses after the crash reported seeing the driver of the vehicle running back to check on the victim after the accident. They said the driver was fully cooperative with officers upon their arrival.

"The driver reported seeing the man walking along the highway in the grass. As the driver’s vehicle neared the man’s location, he suddenly walked into the roadway crossing in front of the driver’s vehicle," says the Aransas Pass Police Department website. "The driver tried but was unable to avoid colliding with the man. The driver stopped and ran back to check on him while also calling 911."

After a sobriety and blood test, police say the driver was determined to be unimpaired at the time.
