One local doctor is trying to save her patients money when it comes to insulin.
Dr. Brandi Addison, an endocrinologist from Thomas Span Clinic, located at Corpus Christi Medical Center Bay Area, says the number one reason diabetic patients don’t use insulin is because of the cost of the drug.
Over the last few years, researchers and doctors have tracked the prices saying issues like patents and the lack of a generic form have caused the price hike.
Meanwhile, Addison says some of her patients are choosing between eating or buying insulin.
“Don’t give up, don’t get discouraged because this is your life you’re fighting for your life,” she said. “Reach out to your physicians and other healthcare associates who maybe can provide resources because sometimes patients just don’t know what resources are available.”
There is some good news.
Just last week, a generic form of insulin called “Insulin LisPro” was released by the maker of “Humalog” cutting the cost by about half. Wal-Mart also offers an inexpensive form for just under $25.
Dr. Addison say to be sure and check with your doctor.
