Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest in the Coastal Bend as tourists and residents alike will take in our area beaches.
It is a busy weekend for our beaches. It also will be one of the busiest weekends for our local law enforcement who will up their presence and efforts this weekend to maintain a sense of safety.
“We up our patrol on the island,” Corpus Christi Police Department Deputy Chief Chris White said. “We have an additional six officers everyday plus traffic units helping with traffic flow.”
The Texas Department of Safety will also be joining CCPD in its efforts.
“We’re out there with our increased patrol to look for drunk drivers, people not wearing their seat belts and distracted driving,” DPS Sgt. Nathan Brandley said.
In 2018, DPS made 391 DWI arrests state wide, so once again they will be on the lookout.
“During the holiday people are out there celebrating, enjoying a few adult beverages, so the number of drunk drivers goes up,” Sgt. Brandley said.
Law enforcement officials are also asking that residents and visitors remain vigilant.
“If you think there is an intoxicated individual, by all means contact the police department so we can respond,” Deputy Chief White said.
CCPD will be expanding their patrols into the downtown area for the large crowds expected to head there as well.
