Thieves are using waterways to commit their crimes. They’ve struck several times on Padre Island in just the past week, using kayaks on the canals to steal things from the back of people’s homes.

The Corpus Christi Police Department told us that two kayaks were stolen from one victim. Another posted on social media that the suspects only got away with a fishing rod and reel set.

However, Marvin Jones, the president of the Padre Isles Property Owners Association, said some residents are concerned that these thefts will escalate.

“It’s in the middle of the night and people get scared that the burglars are going to come into their house,” Jones told KRIS 6 News.

He added that most of these incidents are happening in the early morning hours between 3-5 a.m. Residents have reporting sightings of the suspected thieves as recently as Wednesday morning.

CCPD said these are often crimes of opportunity. That’s why Jones is urging residents to take protective measures.

“Lock up their materials. Lock up their kayaks. Lock up their boats, their back doors, front doors, garages and cars,” he suggested.

Jones also encouraged people to file a police report if they become a target.

“It’s extremely important for the residents to report all crime, all theft out here so that the statistics can be shown and thus we get more police protection based on the need.”

CCPD told KRIS 6 News that a patrol was in the area Wednesday night in hopes of catching the thieves. So far, no arrests have been made.
