Del Mar College received a record-breaking grant today to develop a skilled workforce for the anticipated plastics plant.

Gulf Coast Growth Ventures has donated $1.5 million dollars to the college for expansion of its west campus.

The college will build the Gulf Coast Growth Ventures Process Technology Lab which will be used to train potential workers and help students gain on-hands experience.

Gulf Coast Growth Ventures is a joint venture between ExxonMobil and SABIC to advance construction of a proposed plastics manufacturing facility in San Patricio County, Texas.

The project is expected to create over 600 new permanent jobs with good salaries and benefits. And that means qualified candidates are needed.

The company says it will focus on the local workforce to fill those positions. School officials expect the new lab to be ready by this summer.  The plant begins operations in late 2021.

Del Mar College officials say they are excited for the ongoing relationship between the college and Gulf Coast Growth Ventures.
