Volunteers across Texas are heading to the water the take part in the annual Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Program.

The program, started by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 2002, calls on volunteers to remove crab traps that have been left in area waters and are now considered litter.

TPWD says the abandoned traps pose an environmental risk because they can trap and kill crabs, fish and turtles.

This year’s program runs Feb. 15 – 24.
