Martin Longoria from the Nueces County Veterans Services said, “that is where the greatest generation fought and the greatest generation will never be forgotten and it’s just something that needs to continue to be recognized.”

Among the local veterans being honored, Colonel Ritterby was the main speaker at the event and a survivor of the historic battle.

The legendary battle, which took place in 1945, marked the moment that the United States Marine Corps took the island of Iwo Jima from the Japenese Imperial Army. 74 years later, we celebrate their victory and remember the famous photo of US soldiers raising the flag atop Mount Suribachi.
