A flier circulating on social media is causing some alarm to many food stamp recipients.
The flyer states that because of the government shutdown, stores will not be accepting EBT food stamps after January 31.
More than 2,500 stores nationwide did not renew their license for the program before the government shutdown, and now cannot accept food stamps, but this is not affecting any major retailers in the Coastal Bend.
“Over 99 percent of SNAP retailers are able to accept benefits as usual. There is a small percentage of stores that failed to complete a required reauthorization process that was due on Dec. 21. These stores can take steps to update their status once funding is restored,” the USDA said in a statement.
Retailers in the Coastal Bend, like H-E-B and Walmart, both have up to date licensees and are accepting EBT and Food Stamps throughout the month of February.
