The students at Rockport-Fulton High School lost their beloved gym when Hurricane Harvey ripped through the Coastal Bend on August 25, 2017.

Enter Ellen DeGeneres.

On her show last April, Ellen announced that she teamed up with Lowe’s to commit $1 million to build a new gym at the high school, the biggest giveaway in the history of her show.

Today, Aransas County ISD will break ground on the new gym, marking another step forward in their Hurricane Harvey recovery.

The design for the new gym was approved in December. It will be just over 17,000 square feet and seat nearly 1,000 patrons. A large lobby will hold concession stands for those watching games.

Since the old gym was destroyed, the girls volleyball team has shared a gym with others.

“We’re definitely really excited and I can’t wait to get our gym so we can have a gym for ourselves,” said Molly Frost, a junior and Rockport-Fulton High School volleyball player.

The groundbreaking ceremony is today at 1 p.m. at 1801 Omohundro St. in Rockport.

The new gym should be open to students by next October.
