A wrong-way driver crash killed one person and injured four others on New Year’s Day morning, and police now say that alcohol was likely a factor in this accident.

A 28-year-old man was driving east in the westbound lanes of Highway 358 when he slammed into an SUV at the Staples exit. The wrong-way driver died at the scene. Police suspect he had been drinking prior to the crash.

Four people in the other vehicle, including a 71-year-old man who was trapped in the wreckage for a short time, were injured in the crash, but are expected to recover.

Officers began receiving reports of the wrong-way driver in the Annaville area but they were not able to stop him before the wreck.

This was the seventh crash reported to Corpus Christi police in the first eight hours of 2019 and the first fatal accident of 2019.
