As Cullen Middle School is torn down there’s concern over what will happen to the memorial plaques of former students who have passed.

Construction crews are already hard at work demolishing the nearly 60-year old building. It was back in May, the school was closed due to lack of enrollment.

Although the future of the land is uncertain, parents like Rafaela Sanchez worry about those memorial plaques for students like Alfredo Reyna. Rafaela’s son’s best friend, who passed away years ago.

Sanchez said “If they’re going to destroy the trees, make sure these plaques go to the families especially the mamas, because it’s really hard losing a child in middle school.”

A spokesperson with CCISD says the plaques will stay in their place.
