Stephen F. Austin Elementary in Gregory is on a lockout until further notice.
Chief Cano with the Gregory Police Department said the lockout was issued after seven to eight people bailed out during a traffic stop on Route 202 near Highway 35. Three of the suspects have been caught and confirmed to be in the country illegally, according to Cano.
Border Patrol is assisting in the search for the others.
Cano said the suspects were running away from the area of the school but wanted to be sure the kids were safe.
“I don’t think the school is in any danger but we don’t want to take any chances,” Cano said.
Lockdowns are typically to protect students from danger inside of a school, while lockouts are intended to protect students from possible danger entering the school from the outside.
A post to the Gregory-Portland ISD Facebook page says the school resource officer, along with staff, are assisting with getting kids inside during drop-off.
