Corpus Christi Police and the Insurance Council of Texas hosted an event today aimed at reducing the city’s high number of auto break-ins.

Corpus Christi was one of three cities selected to participate in the council’s “Lock, Take, and Hide” campaign.

According to CCPD, approximately 2,900 vehicles were broken into in the city last year.

Lt. Colby Burris with CCPD’s Auto Theft Task Force says three steps can save drivers from becoming auto burglary victims: Lock your car, take your keys and hide your belongings.

“If we can get people to remember those things, take, lock and hide, we can reduce our numbers significantly.” Burris said.

The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority will also be helping to spread the message; two specially wrapped buses will be making their way around city streets beginning today.
