Educators and civil rights leaders gathered earlier today to pay tribute to one of their own.
It was all done in celebration of local civil rights hero Dr. Hector P. Garcia, a local doctor who advocated for education equality and Hispanic veterans.
Del Mar regent Elva Estrada said the occasion is a way to give back.
“Dr. Garcia did so much for our country, the state and our community in particular. We are just here to honor him and carry on his legacy,” Estrada said.
Garcia’s daughter, Cecilia Garcia-Akers and her husband, Jimmy, presented the college with a $25,000 donation from the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation.
The event was organized by the college, H-E-B and the South Texas chapter of the American GI Forum, a civil rights organization founded by Dr. Hector P. Garcia.
