Nueces County Emergency Services District 1 will be receiving $790,720 in federal funding from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program.
The grant program helps fire departments increase the number of frontline firefighters and provides funding to support their work.
The goal of the program is to increase their staffing and deployment capabilities at fire departments and ultimately attain 24-hour staffing; ensuring communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.
SAFER grants support two specific activities, the hiring of firefighters, and the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.
SAFER is part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants and is under the Office of Grants and Training of the Department of Homeland Security.
