The Corpus Christi Vet Center wants to remind Veterans they’re here in the Coastal Bend to provide licensed professional counselors or help with anything they need.

Manuel Colomo is a Veteran himself. He served in Vietnam as a Marine.
“When I first got out, I was married. Having problems. Drinking too much,” said Colomo. “I was trying to process the memories and had survival guilt of leaving my men behind because I was a squad leader when I left Vietnam.”
He understands how people feel when they return from the war zone, and is now a therapist at the Corpus Christi Vet Center.
“They feel lost. They feel they can’t connect with other people. They feel other people don’t understand them,” says Colomo. “Trauma is trauma and everybody process it differently.”
The Vet Center has been around for 33 years but sometimes Veterans forget it’s there.
That’s where the community outreach comes in and you don’t need much to get their assistance.
Will Hernandez, Outreach Specialist at the Corpus Christi Vet Center says “A lot of people here think of the VA or VA Health Care and think ‘Oh. I’m going to have to bring my entire medial record’ Not at all. All we need is a DD214, a discharge. That’s all we need and we can get you set up here.”
They deal with PTSD, bereavement, military sexual trauma, marital counseling and serve 14 counties.
And it’s all free.
“We don’t tell people what to do. We provide the tools and they choose what works for them,” says Colomo.
