Remember the first day of school? How excited you were to see your friends again and even sport a new haircut, new backpack, new school supplies.

It’s estimated over 40,000 students here in the Coastal Bend will not share in that same feeling of excitement because they do not have the supplies they need for school.

That’s where Operation Supply Our Students comes in.

A school supply collection drive that’s been happening for over 2 decades thanks to The United Way of The Coastal Bend, H-E-B, KRIS TV and you!!!

Conrado Garica, Superintendent of West Oso ISD is thankful for all the community support because he personally sees the need and has seen it for decades.

“I would like to thank H-E-B, Channel 6, The United Way and all of the citizens of Corpus Christi. This is the first step in believing in our children. When they receive the supplies, oh my goodness. They’re so excited. They can hardly wait to see what’s in the bag. They start bragging to everybody else and that twinkle in their eye says thank you” says Garcia.

Garcia goes on to say “The mamas are so appreciative. The teachers are appreciative. So we always say if a kid comes fully prepared, we’ll do the rest. We just need for them to come with that excitement and attitude. This is so important. The need is so great. There are many families that are just making it and I know it because I’m in it everyday. I see it. And so when the citizens of this great city step up and give, I salute them. We thank them that they believe in public schools and say we’re going to make a difference in kids lives.”

Marcy Davis, Principal at John F. Kennedy Elementary says Operation SOS not only benefits the students but the teachers as well.

“This really helps our teachers not have to come out of pocket. Because our teachers are so giving and so loving they want to spend their own money to help kids.”

So how about helping this great cause? There are several different ways.

1) At any H-E-B, you can buy a ready to go brown paper bag filled with supplies for under $6.00 (just ask for it at the check out)

2) Text SOS to 91999

3) At any H-E-B, when you’re at the check out counter, pull a $1, $3 or $5 coupon and give it to the cashier. The money will go to SOS. (the tear pads will be available until mid August)

4) Make a cash donation at the following HEB’s this week:

Wednesday Aug 1 – H-E-B Roberts at Alameda

Thursday Aug 2 – H-E-B Portland

Friday Aug 3 – H-E-B Plus Saratoga

By the way, every bit of money collected goes straight to buying school supplies.

From the bottom of our hearts, Thank you for your help!
