CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Some workers at local restaurants are seeing their hours curtailed because of the coronavirus.

Most bars and restaurants in the Coastal Bend remain open. However, some national chain restaurants are closing their doors and laying off their wait staff.

Manuela Jimenez started working at a local buffet restaurant two weeks ago, but when the coronavirus epidemic got worse she was laid off.

But she wasn’t out of work long though, as she quickly found another position at a downtown Corpus Christi restaurant.

Santos Garcia, general manager at La Playa by the Bay, says his business still is hiring servers like Manuela. And even though his business isn't great, he says he remains positive until his customers come back.

And if you were laid off, there is good news according to Texas Workforce Solutions. More than 7,000 open jobs in the Coastal Bend.

Among the hottest categories include retail employees and restaurant servers.
