We keep hearing about how important maintaining social distancing is especially during a time like this. However KRIS 6 has received a number of complaints from viewers about people not maintaining a safe distance at local parks and businesses.
That's despite Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales' stay-at-home order, which states everyone must practice social disancing, staying at least six feet away from other people while they're out in public.
City and county leaders said social distancing is something we’re going to have to get used to and practice for some time. While it is okay to get out of the house and enjoy time at the park, it’s still not okay to gather in large groups.
However, KRIS 6 captured video of at least seven people playing basketball at Water’s Edge Park on Monday evening. One viewer also reached out to KRIS 6 about the Lowe’s on Airline allowing too many people inside at a time. The viewer also sent us photos and said a number of employees aren’t wearing masks or gloves.
Judge Canales has also received a number of similar complaints about people not practicing social distancing when they’re in public. But she said the number of positive COVID-19 cases in Nueces County is low thanks to the community’s efforts. However, she has a message for those not obeying the order.
"Sometimes we hear about this in areas that are very popular and sometimes we hear about it in stores like the big box stores,” said Judge Canales. "For those few of you out there doing the wrong thing, just sit back, and think about someone you love. I know you don't want that person to get ill."
Judge Canales did mention code enforcement do patrol downtown parks, however they do not patrol 24/7.
Meanwhile we spoke to a manager at Lowe’s, and she said she couldn’t comment on the situation there, but mentioned she would get back to us.
