CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A local restaurant is doing its part to help those who in need during a global pandemic.

The Imperial Cafe, near Everhart and Corona Drive, has handed out 900 free meals over the past two Saturdays, according to Sang Sananikone, the owner of Imperial Cafe. Sang and her staff cooked the meals the night before to hand out the next day.

"450 meals, it took us 8 hours last night to prepare them with 3 people including myself," Sananikone said.

450 last Saturday and 450 today makes 900 total. She says this is something they were ready for.

"We used to feed the homeless people in downtown," Sananikone said. "Donate food privately to those in need. We knew and we prepared when COVID-19 started."

Currently, Imperial Cafe has limited curbside pickup and delivery hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.. Nobody is allowed inside their restaurant but the staff, who is happy to be serving the community.

"We do worry and that's why we try to help and encourage people here in Nueces County. We have to work together. That's why we try to tell customers to come to pick up food and encourage everyone to work together and stop this," Sananikone told us.

They plan on keeping this up as long as they can receive supply from wholesale. The next meal giveaway will be Saturday, April 11.
