CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi held another food giveaway for students on Thursday. Hundreds showed up to the drive up event held at the Momentum Village student housing complex.
"Right now with the coronvirus going on, we know that there are some students who have lost their jobs," said Lisa Perez, Asst. Vice President for Student Life.
The event was organized through the Izzy Food Pantry and supported by the Coastal Bend Food Bank. This was the third food giveaway, the university hosted to help students struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"So we're hoping that this is just a small way of providing food to those in need, and additionally it's about removing a barrier for our students so that they can continue to be successful as they're taking their classes online," said Perez.
The first two events received an overwhelming response. Students lined up outside of the food pantry and waited for their turn to get two bags of food and toilet paper. Thursday's event offered students easier access to the food. Nearly 400 students drove up and let volunteers fill their trunks with the items.
"The Islander community is getting access to some fresh produce, to some chicken breasts, some pork loin, some ham, some bread items and some soups and drinks," said Perez.
To enforce social distancing practices, volunteers wore PPE and loaded the trunks. Students were asked to remain in their vehicles.
