CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Blood donors are in high demand across the Coastal Bend.

As local businesses and schools close amid coronavirus concerns, many mobile blood drives are being canceled.

Around 80 percent of the Coastal Bend Blood Bank’s collections come from those drives, especially at local high schools.

Now, they're asking for help from the community to avoid a massive blood shortage.

“We are going to see a big impact of not being able to draw from those donors, so we are anticipating a drop in those donations,” said Coastal Bend Blood Bank CEO Corey Survant. “And that's why we are really encouraging health donors to come and help us out in the next few weeks.”

The Coastal Bend Blood Bank is taking extra precautions to keep the donation areas clean to help prevent the spreading of COVID-19.

They say it remains completely safe to donate blood.
