A Las Vegas mother is in jail accused of intentionally drowning her young daughter in a bathtub.

Las Vegas Police Lt. Ray Spencer called the 2-year-old’s death “disturbing.”

“Well I can tell you, disturbing is an understatement,” Spencer said. “I have officers out here that are extremely shaken up. We have a 2-year-old child that was senselessly murdered.”

Police responded to a Northeast valley apartment complex just after 3 p.m., prompted after a 911 call from the child’s mother.

“That female stated that her 2-year-old child had drowned in the bathtub,” Spencer said. “While on the phone for several minutes with the 911 operator, the operator tried to give instructions for the female to pull the child out of the water and also to give CPR.”

Police said the mother wouldn’t pull her child out or give her CPR. Officers knocked on the door less than five minutes later but the mother took minutes to answer

When police got inside they found a disturbing sight.

“He went in, found the child face up, fully clothed in a bathtub full of water,” Spencer said.

Emergency crews gave the child CPR, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

This was the second call to this home.

“There is a prior call for service this morning where there was a domestic disturbance that was reported,” Spencer said.

The toddler’s mother, meanwhile, is facing a murder charge. Police are reminding families that help is out there.

“There are many resources out there,” Spencer said. “The point is that this is absolutely absurd that I’m here discussing 2-year-old who was senselessly murdered.”
