Pet apps are becoming increasingly popular among pet owners, but are they safe?

Yes, they’re convenient for a busy owner, but some people aren’t fond of the idea of leaving their dog with a stranger.

Apps like Wag and Rover can be used to find someone to dog-sit your pup, or take them for a walk. Just download the app, and you can see all the sitters in your area, and message one you’re interested in.

If you want to use apps like these, there are some measures put in place to ensure the safety of your furry friends.

Kara Coffey, a rover dog sitter for more than two years, says if you find a sitter you’re interested in, check their reviews. You can also set up a meet-and-greet ahead of time, to see if they’re a good fit.

“I want to meet their dog,” said Coffey. “I want to meet them, I want them to meet me, and just have that in-person connection so they can ask me whatever they want.”

Other safety measures put in place include payments done only through the app. Payments also include insurance, so if your dog gets bit by another dog, it would cover the cost of medical bills. Plus dog sitters don’t get paid until the visit is done, and your dog is back home safe and sound. And you can always ask for pictures and updates on your pet.

“Go with your gut,” said Coffey. “It ensures the safeness of your dog, (and) the happiness of you as a client.”

As a pet owner, you can also check if the dog sitter offers additional insurance outside of the app. Plus, if your dog goes for a walk, you can also get updates on where the walk was and how long it took.
