Legendary basketball coach David Dunlap, one of the greatest all-around coaches in South Texas history, has announced his retirement after 50 years.

Ray, 73, won almost 600 games as the girls’ coach at Ray High School.

He came out of retirement 14 years ago to become a varsity assistant with his good buddy James McMinn at Flour Bluff. They had a great run, going to the state tournament two years ago.

Dunlap was diagnosed with Stage 3 kidney cancer three years ago, but he refused to let that slow him down.

But after 50 years coaching and mentoring thousands of student-athletes.

He says it’s time to hang up the whistle and spend time with his family and grandkids.
