The high school softball playoffs began last night and continue to heat up this evening.

Tonight’s games include:

Class 5A

  • Carroll at Gregory Portland, 6 p.m.

(Lady Tigers lead series 1-0)

  • Veterans at Calallen, 7 p.m.

(Lady Cats lead series 1-0)

  • Tuloso-Midway vs. Port Lavaca

(Tonight at Floresville, 8 p.m.)

And last night, the Flour Bluff Lady Hornets, the 29-5A district champs, took care of business up in Victoria with an 11-2 triumph over Victoria West in a winner-take-all affair.

So the Bluff advances to play Mercedes next.

We have learned it will be a best-of-three series, probably in Falfurrias, starting Thursday and running through Saturday.

This is one of the best softball teams Flour Bluff has ever put on the diamond. They made school history by winning their first outright district title this season.

“Just going out and having fun and they have created a sisterhood and they trust each other and have each others’ back,” Flour Bluff coach Angela Scott said. “And they are fighters, they never give up a good fight because in several games they have come from behind because they don’t know what the word quit actually means. So, it’s a lot of fun to coach these girls.”

Flour Bluff is certainly playing some great softball now. I certainly would not want to play them.
