Igloo releases world’s first eco-friendly, compostable cooler

Igloo has released what they call “the world’s first eco-sensitive cooler made from 100% biodegradable materials.”

The “Recool 16-quart Cooler” is intended to be an alternative to single use EPS foam coolers. It is made out of paper pulp and AKD (Alkyl ketene dimer), the organic compound that keeps the cooler water proof.

This guilt-free cooler can hold ice for up to 12 hours and will retain water without leaking for up to five days.

The hard-sided cooler is strong enough to hold 75 pounds and is even reusable. Just empty it, let it air dry, and use again.

The Recool design features built-in handles and a lid with four cup holders on it. Igloo claims that it is surprisingly rugged. “It won’t chip or break when bumped or dropped like commonly happens with foam coolers.”

At just $10, the cooler can be purchased exclusively at REI stores starting May 1 or on Igloo’s website.
