Rockport police officials say there is no indication of criminal activity involved in the death of a 54-year-old former Williamson County District Attorney who had recently resettled to the Coastal Bend.

The woman is identified as Jana Duty Hunsicker. She was found dead inside a home at the Oak Bay Condos on Oak Bay Drive near the Rockport Country Club at about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday.

“The investigation has not revealed any indication of criminal conduct by any party at this time,” according to the Rockport Police release.

Hunsicker was a controversial former Williamson County District Attorney. She had won the seat in 2013 before losing her re-election bid in 2016. The county encompasses the suburban areas north of Austin including Round Rock and Georgetown.

“We are heartbroken at the loss and our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, children and grandchildren.” Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell said in a prepared statement.

The website Courthousenews.com indicates that Hunsicker, a Republican who was then known as Jana Duty, spent five days in jail for a contempt conviction. She also was accused of withholding evidence in a murder trial and had to fight a petition that attempted to boot her from office.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that interim Rockport Police Chief Fred Fletcher told them police had received a report about a shot fired at the condominium where Hunsicker’s body was found.

According to a post on her Facebook page, she and her husband bought a condominium in Rockport in July after they gave up on building a house in Nicaragua because of the civil unrest in that country.

The Statesman reports that the State Bar of Texas put her on probation during her last 18 months in office as district attorney because of professional misconduct. Two lawsuits to remove her during her last year in office were unsuccessful. After she lost her reelection bid in 2016 to current Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick, officials said she left behind a backlog of 218 cases.

Rockport police and the Texas Rangers are continuing to investigate Hunsicker’s death.
