Calallen checked at No. 10 in this week’s state softball rankings. It means the Lady Cats are the area’s highest ranked team, according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
The Lady Cats are enjoying one of the best seasons in school history.
They are 22-3 and tied with Flour Bluff for first place in District 29-5A.
With only four games left in the regular season, Calallen and the Bluff will square off in the final game. It could well determine the champion.
Coach Teresa Lentz is in her seventh season as Calallen’s head coach. She says her team has the makings of something really special in 2019.
“Even me hitting to them, it’s hard for me to hit through the infield, even the outfield,” Lentz said. “It’s kind of fun to watch. They are exciting to coach and it makes for a good game.”
Calallen pitcher Lizette Del Angel says her team’s resiliency sets them apart from others
“I like how we can adapt to any situation,” Del Angel said. “We never give up. Even if we are down, we always find a way to come back.”
The Wildcats are poised for a deep run this season if they can build on their fast start, according to pitcher Katherine Flores.
And she’s a little greedy with how she wants this team to finish.
“I believe if we keep working this hard, we definitely have a chance to make it to state this year,” Flores said. “We all come together really well, good team chemistry.
“We trust each other. That’s been our goal for the past four years now, we don’t want to share the district title. We want it all to ourselves.”
Up next for the Lady Cats is Alice on Friday night.
