Gregory-Portland’s fierce defense has soccer team pointed to state championships

As we get deeper into the high school soccer playoffs, the Gregory-Portland girls team is putting together an amazing run, especially on defense.

And here’s why. While going undefeated in district play, the Lady Wildcats did not give up a single goal.

That’s right. Zero.

No goals allowed and that streak stretched into the playoffs. The Lady Wildcats went 14 straight games without giving up a goal until last night when they defeated Edcouch-Elsa, 3-1, to advance to the regional quarterfinals.

They now will play Veterans Memorial Friday night.

It’s a feat that is pretty incredible and something they take a lot of pride in accomplishing.

“Anytime we lose the ball, we are the first ones that want to fight and get the ball back and score,” forward Alyssa DeLeon said. “To me, it’s just a matter of hard work and it’s been proven that’s what we do. I fully believe that we can get to Georgetown and get to that state tournament. It’s just a matter of staying focused.”

Midfielder Osiris Duarte agrees.

“It’s the whole team working together to get through stuff and fight through a few bad situations and put our whole heart into the game and get a win,” Duarte said.

They’ll try to keep winning as they face Vets at 6 p.m. Friday at Cabaniss Field.
