Hooks girding for Futures Weekend, opening day

The start of the Hooks’ 2019 regular season is only six days away from their opener.

But tomorrow night, Futures Weekend gets underway when the Hooks play the Round Rock Express in an exhibition game at Whataburger Field starting at 6:15 p.m.

They got in their very first practice session today since their roster was announced, with 16 players returning from last year’s team.

One player to keep an eye on is Granden Goetzman, a free agent pickup from the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization.

At 6-foot-3 and 248 pounds, this 26-year-old outfielder can crush it. I predict he will definitely be a fan favorite.

“I like to swing hard just in case I make contact,” Goetzman said. “So we are going to do damage up there.

“I’m excited, (we’ve got) a really good group of guys, looking forward to a big year and putting on a show for the fans. I spent seven years with the (Tampa Bay) Rays (organization), half a season with the Cardinals, so I’m excited about this opportunity Houston has given me and I look forward to this year.”

After tomorrow’s game, the Hooks and Express finish the weekend series Sunday afternoon in Round Rock.
