A driver involved in a one-vehicle rollover on U.S. Highway 181 at the on ramp next to the old Nueces County Courthouse was taken to Spohn Shoreline Hospital late Monday morning after the accident.
The accident shut down the entrance ramp to Interstate 37 for several hours.
The driver apparently was carrying steel pipes for oil wells. As he took the on ramp onto the highway getting onto the Harbor Bridge, the load shifted and the top weight forced the truck to flip onto its side.
Police said the truck spilled some diesel in the accident that was quickly covered up.
Traffic was snarled in the area after the accident. Police estimated it would take up to two hours to clear up the scene.
It took rescue crews about 15 minutes to get the driver out of the damaged vehicle, police said.
The driver received some head lacerations in the accident, but was conscious and able to talk to police after the incident.
The Department of Public Safety is at the scene to determine whether any citations will be issued.
