With Black Friday and Cyber Monday, sometimes small businesses get lost in the shuffle.

“We try to support Jewel’s and the stores in Lamar Park that are home grown. It’s really important,” Linda Powell said.

Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 as a way to encourage people to shop at locally owned businesses like coffee shops and mom-and-pop stores.

Megan Martin is the manager at Benjamin’s Surf Shop and said Small Business Saturday is one of their most profitable days all year.

“And the thing we love about it is that it gets our local customers to come out and support local businesses to keep our town unique and keep these businesses around,” Martin said.

In recent years, the event has been so successful, business owners in the Crossroads Shopping Village created a block party to celebrate their loyal customers.

Saturday’s block party will be held in the Crossroads Shopping Village near Airline and McCardle from 12-3 p.m.
