28 applicants under consideration for sheriff’s position

The Nueces County human resources department released a list of 28 applicants for the soon-to-be vacant position of county sheriff.

Among the more notable applicants include John Hooper of the Corpus Christi Police Department, former CCPD officer Larry Young Sr., Capt. Monica Villagomez Rios of Nueces County Sheriff’s Office and former CCPD officer Jose F. Olivares.

County Commissioners will interview the five finalists during their weekly meeting on Wednesday. The breakdown of applicants released on Friday included 21 men and seven women.

The vacancy was created when longtime Sheriff Jim Kaelin announced his retirement last month. His last day on the job will be Oct. 31.

The eventual choice will fill the rest of Kaelin’s term, lasting through 2020.
