Some high-tech equipment has been brought in to help find lost graves in the Old Bayview Cemetery.

Ground penetrating radar is being used to find unmarked graves in the cemetery.

A restoration project is currently planned for the cemetery, but before work can start, any lost our forgotten graves need to be located.

The ground penetrating device uses radar to detect changes in soil structure that could indicate the location of a grave.

“That’s going to help us in determining where to run power lines for lighting,” said Karen Howden from the Fiends of Old Bayview Cemetery Association. “Where to place walking paths so we’re not walking top of people.”

Howden says the ground penetrating radar is usually expensive, but the service was donated for free.
