GROW Local South Texas is doing what they can to expand the knowledge of growing your own food.

From the beginning, the group’s mission has been to grow a healthy, local community by improving access to, education about and advocacy for affordable, nutrient-dense foods. They have not only tried to encourage the number of points where consumers can get locally grown fresh produce, but have also encouraged restaurants to use local ingredients grown in local gardens.

Funding comes from memberships, individual and corporate donations, private foundations and public grants.

Their main programs include:

  • The Corpus Christi Downtown Farmers’ Market
  • The Learning Garden
  • BAWKtoberfest, backyard chicken coop tour
  • Annual Farm-to-Table Dinner
  • Living Local Summer Camp with Youth Odyssey
  • The Educational Beehive

Those who are interested in joining the group should call (855) 476-9789 or visit www.growlocalstx.com.

Both annual and lifetime memberships are available, and include discounts for local businesses and services.

For an annual individual membership it is $25, for students and military it is only $10 and families are $35.

GROW Local South Texas is currently accepting applications for BAWKtoberfest 2018 from Corpus Christi homeowners with backyard chicken coops who would like to appear on the Backyard Chicken Coop Tour & Fundraiser. The deadline to apply is August 11th. Details may be found on the GROW Local STX website.

GROW Local South Texas hopes to expand their education and encourage other organizations and groups to promote the same values that they do.
