A downtown restaurant owner has a major cleanup on his hands today due to recent rains.

The owner of the South Bech grill on South Chaparral Street says that for the past three years, every time there’s a heavy rain, sewage backs up into his restaurant.

Curt Broomfield, the restaurant’s owner, says he’s been up since 1 a.m. cleaning up the mess.

“Since one o’clock this morning, I’m cleaning sewage out, and I’ll still be doing that cause the rain is just now starting and we have three days of this,” Broomfield said. “I don’t know how going to survive through these three days”

Broomfield says he’s not the only one facing this problem, an auto shop and an apartment building near his restaurant have been having similar problems that all began after the city wrapped  up phase one of the Chaparral Street project.

Broomfield says he’s tried to get someone from the city to look into the problem, but he’s gotten nowhere.

Someone from the city’s Stormwater and Wastewater Department did come out to check the situation this morning, but told Broomfield they don’t know why the problem keeps happening.
