On the 70th anniversary of the Woman’s Armed Services Integration Act, which allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the military the Coastal Bend Women Veterans will celebrate their first-ever "Women Veterans Day" ceremony.

LeAnn Fox, founder of Coastal Bend Women Veteranssaid "Women do serve, they’ve served for a very long time and now they can pretty much serve in any capacity and so just giving them some recognition for the service they’ve given and that they continue to give, I think is just really important."

Fox, a veteran of the Navy, founded the group back in 2014 after she noticed a need for a support group for women veterans in the coastal bend, to help them find their way back into the civilian world.

She says although local women veterans attend other ceremonies throughout the year she’s excited to have a day to celebrate women who have served or are currently serving.

Women Veterans Day will be celebrated locally on Tuesday, June 12th with a mayoral proclamation during city council. The first-ever Women Veteran Day Commemorative Ceremony will be held a few days later on June 16th at Sherrill Park.
