Preparing for hurricane season? Here’s what you should know

Posted

Part of preparing for hurricane season is making sure you have the right supplies on hand. Many necessary supplies can be bought at home improvement stores like The Home Depot.

Angel Solis, the manager at a local Home Depot, says one of the most important things to know about the hurricane season, is having a plan of action.

"The more prepared you are, the easier it is," Solis said. "Don’t be caught not ready like we were last year."

To be prepared, Solis and other store managers are encouraging customers to stock up on supplies they’ll need if a storm hits. Stores like Home Depot can help out with all the must-haves. Plywood is important and pretty popular, so customers are urged to buy it early because it sells out quickly when storms threaten the coast.

Hurricane Harvey left much of the Coastal Bend without electricity, so batteries and flashlights are also important. If it’s affordable, generators are another must.

The Home Depot is making it easy for customers to pick up supplies too. A table is set up near the store entrance with many hurricane-ready supplies ready to be bought.

One more tip, don’t wait until the last minute to prepare for a storm.

"Start getting prepared now so when something does happen, you’re not caught off guard," Solis said.

Solis also says items like water bottles, a radio, first aid kit, ice chest and a grill can come in handy.

But there are many other things to consider when preparing for hurricane season. You’ll find more resources unique to our area online on our Hurricane Center at this link.
