Gov. Greg Abbott calls for special election for Congressional District 27 seat

Posted

Governor Greg Abbott has called for a special election to cover the remainder of Blake Farenthold’s term after his abrupt resignation last month.

Tuesday afternoon, Governor Abbott set that date to fill the 27th congressional district seat and candidates have only a few days to file.

Farenthold, who already announced he was not seeking re-election, abruptly resigned last month leaving the 27th congressional district without any representation.

His resignation came amid a public backlash after it was revealed the former Congressman used $84,000 taxpayer dollars to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against him.

The special election will be held Saturday, June 30th.

The candidate filing deadline is this Friday, April 27th.

Early voting will be held from June 13th and end on June 26th.

Since the announcement of the special election, Michael Cloud sent KRIS 6 News this statement:

“I declared my candidacy for this seat in September because I believe the people of our district deserve conservative, courageous leadership. That still holds true today. I will file to run in the special election to fill the vacancy for our Congressional seat.”
