A lot of plants in this part of the state that aren’t used to the sub-freezing temperatures South Texas has experienced recently.

The most common way to protect them is to cover them up, but what about watering your plants?

Our Fact Check team asked: Is it a good idea to water plants just before a freeze?

Experts say yes, watering your plants can help protect them during a freeze.

“The reason is that roots will soak up the water and will stay thicker than being dry and brittle and they won’t break as easily,” said Tomena Adkins, with Turner’s Gardenland. “It will actually protect them and it keeps them warmer.”

Here’s another tip, don’t use a plastic tarp to cover your plants. Use something made out of cloth, that will trap ground heat better and protect the plant’s roots.
