CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Some area first responders now have some much-needed protection from the coronavirus thanks to the Corpus Christi Regional Transit Authority.

The CCRTA donated 30,000 masks to constables, police, firefighters and medics from nine Coastal Bend communities.

The donation is part of the RTA’s “B Safe” campaign. The initiative is meant to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the community.

“Our main priority is to protect our officers but also the public,” Precinct 1 Constable Felipe Martinez said. “So this allows us to have that security that when we go out there and respond to calls, the officer doesn't have to worry ‘Do I have a mask, do I don't have a mask?' So this donation is greatly appreciated by the the Precinct 1 constables.”

The RTA isn't forgetting its riders either, handing out up to 500 masks on a daily basis to people who ride their vehicles.
