CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The public is invited to a ceremony in honor of legendary doctor and civil rights activist Dr. Hector P. Garcia.
The event takes place this Monday, Jan. 13, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m..
Hosted by the Veterans Band of Corpus Christi, it takes place at the Seaside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 4357 Ocean Drive, Corpus Christi, Texas 78412.
The Mexican American physician, surgeon, World War II veteran, civil rights advocate, and founder of the American G.I. Forum has deep roots in our South Texas Community.
In 2014, the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center was established to honor the legacy of Dr. Garcia and his work in Corpus Christi.
"Located on the grounds of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – Memorial, the new Health Center will provide family series for surrounding residents located conveniently close to home, in a state-of-the-art 43,000 square-foot facility honoring the legacy of a man who cared for all Coastal Bend residents regardless of status or income," the Christus Health website says.
Also, Dr. Garcia's papers are the centerpiece of Texas A&M University Corpus Christi's (TAMUCC) manuscript collections.
"Dr. Garcia's papers comprise one of the most valuable resources in existence on the Mexican-American experience during the last half of the twentieth century," says the TAMUCC website.
The legend left behind an unmatched legacy. Among hisinnumerable achievements he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 2002, PBS aired a documentary produced produced by local station KEDT called “Justice for My People: The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Story”.
