The YWCA Corpus Christi is on a mission.

Much of that includes the ongoing goal to teach young girls the importance of staying in school, the value of strong relationships, the skills to overcome bullying behaviors, and techniques for improving their personal self-image.

How better to accomplish that during the summer months than with camps for girls who are completing 5th or 6th grades?

YWCA Leadership Camps are four-day camps which take place from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM each day at the YWCA Corpus Christi (4601 Corona Drive).

During the course of the camp, girls learn friend-making, teamwork, decision-making and more, while meeting community role models in a variety of careers. Plus, each day includes swimming along with a variety of other activities.

According to camp organizers, girls leave after just one four-day session with higher self-confidence, greater interest in school, better friend making and keeping skills, more respect and acceptance of others and a clearer ability to set and attain goals.

The cost of the camp is $110, with some scholarships available to those who are eligible for free or reduced lunches.

The following sessions are filling up fast:

  • June 4-7
  • June 11-14
  • June 18-21
  • June 25-28
  • July 9-12
  • July 16-19
  • August 13-16
  • August 20-23

Healthy lunches and snacks are provided, and each girl should bring a swimsuit and a towel each day.
