Summer will soon be heating up and the folks at Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville are hoping you will keep them in mind as you make plans for a quick, easy and fun getaway!
Open since 1971, many consider GPZ to be one of the top zoos in the country, featuring over 1,600 animals, including Gorillas, Tigers, Macaws, Kangaroos and Komodo Dragons. Most are displayed in settings that resemble their natural habitat.
The zoo sits on 31 acres of lush, tropical plants — 225 species, to be exact — along with an enchanted South Texas themed playground, herpetarium and more. It is well known for its successes in breeding endangered species of wildlife.
The Russell Aquatic Ecology Center is also included in the price of admission, and features a stingray feeding opportunity, sharks, jellyfish and other marine creatures.
The zoo is located at 500 E. Ringgold Street in Brownsville and is open every day of the year from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM, with extended summer hours.
Regular admission for adults ages 14 to 64 is $12, while children ages 2 to 13 pay $8 and seniors 65 and over receive a discounted admission of $10.50. Children aged 2 and under are admitted free.
