Student chapters of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) at the College and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) are joining forces to offer the family-friendly event.
Their goal is to build more diversity among the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) workforce. Anyone thinking about pursuing a career in one of the STEM fields or picturing themselves as a research scientist can learn more about those opportunities and the resources to get them there during "Science Saturday Corpus Christi" on Saturday, April 21, at Del Mar College (DMC).
Attendees can explore the variety of academic and research opportunities DMC and TAMU-CC students pursue.
"Science Saturday Corpus Christi" features science demos, booths and displays, hands-on activities, lab tours of DMC facilities, a meet-and-greet with local scientists and even music and food trucks.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Garcia Science Building located on the East Campus on Edward Street off Ayers Street.

As a community outreach event, "Science Saturday Corpus Christi" is designed to expose Coastal Bend youth to diverse scientists and to encourage them to take an interest in STEM studies through science education and mentorship. Both the College and University encourage students to attain advanced degrees, careers and positions of leadership in STEM while also promoting to SACNAS members that they maintain and embrace their culture throughout their careers to build a more inclusive and diverse STEM workforce.
Community STEM-based organizations also are welcome to participate to help encourage individuals, especially minorities, to pursue one of the four areas of study for STEM careers.
